Island in the ocean or an ocean of islands?
Workshop production and facilitation at “Ragno” artist residency in October 2024.
Island in the ocean or an ocean of islands? is a workshop developed in an aquatic, fluid way that invites participants to re-imagine the social spaces they inhabit. The practice encourages an inner dive to understand what are the barriers that prevent us from feeling appreciated and valued within our chosen or unchosen communities, and observe what emerges.
Building on Sally Munt's (2008) concept of queer heterotopia and historian Kevin Dawson's book A sea of Caribbean Islands, this workshop seeks to re-think and transform everyday spaces into communities of belonging.
The practice is divided into three phases: “embody,” where an avatar or symbolic place is developed to delve into the theme; “drift,” a moment of introspection; and finally “(re)connection,” where a collective space is created together that integrates the personal elements that have emerged.
During the workshop each participant becomes a co-creator of an ecosystem of real or realizable spaces, designed to facilitate the feeling of belonging, based on imagining practices of mutual listening to one's own and collective needs.
